One Year After Plane Crash, Suntai Holds Thanksgiving Service, Says “Death No Longer Scares Me”

October 28, 2013

Recuperating governor of Taraba State, Pharm. Danbaba Danfulani Suntai, has dedicated his survival in a plane crash last year to God, describing it as a miracle.

Governor Suntai, who made this known at the weekend during a thanksgiving service held at the Unity Chapel Church (UCC), Government House, Jalingo, the state capital, said looking back at the incident now, he is no longer afraid of death as he already had his closest shave with death.

Suntai, alongside some of his aides including his Aide de Camp, (ADC) Iliya Dasat; Chief Detail, Joel Danladi; and Chief Security Officer (CSO) Tino Dangana, were involved in a plane crash piloted by the governor near Yola, the Adamawa State capital, on Thursday, October 25 2012.

While his aides sustained non-life threatening injuries and were back on their feet within a few weeks, the governor was not too lucky as he spent ten months abroad undergoing medical treatment including physiotherapy in German and United States hospitals.

He returned to the country on Sunday, August 4, amid claims that some political hawks were scheming to maintain their grip on power which was fast slipping out of their hands as the acting governor, Alhaji Garba Umar, stamped his authority.

Suntai’s return would eventually throw the state into a political crisis as the State House of Assembly refused to honour a letter purportedly emanating from him notifying them of his intention to fully resume office and carry on as governor.

The Assembly had argued that based on its initial assessment of the governor’s state of health, he was not fully fit to resume duties and advised that he returned to the U.S to continue his treatment.

To douse the tension, the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) delegated a team to the state led by Senator Hope Uzodinma to work out a political solution to the crisis.

It was learnt that at the service, not a few worshippers were moved to tears as the governor narrated his ordeal in the past one year.

“I thank God that I survived the air crash to see this day. I am happy to reunite with you again,” Suntai said.

“I also thank the people of Taraba and Nigerians for their prayers which greatly helped me”.

Governor Suntai also preached forgiveness and asked everybody whom he said he may have offended to forgive him.

“Do not hold anything against your enemy or anyone at heart. For me and my family, we have forgiven all our adversaries”, he said.

Suntai added that God has shown him mercy, saying even if he drops dead, he would die a fulfilled man.
