October 18, 2013

Kidnappers of the sister of the president’s special adviser on research, documentation and strategy, Mr Oronto Douglas, yesterday demanded for N500million ransom for her release.

The ransom demand is coming four days after her kidnap on Monday night at the Ogbia Waterside in Ogbia local government area of the state.

LEADERSHIP FRIDAY gathered that the kidnappers contacted the woman’s husband and asked for N500million.

The family source told our correspondent that the husband was allowed to speak with the abducted wife. The source said “Yes,the husband spoke with the kidnappers and he told us that the wife was crying that her body is in pains.”

Meanwhile, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) yesterday claimed to have made contact with the kidnappers Douglas-Ayam, claiming the kidnap was a protest against alleged misuse of military helicopter during the burial rites of the late Pa Douglas in Ikaraba in Nembe area of the state.

According to MEND in a statement signed by Gbomo Jomo, though the group declined to be an intermediary in the ongoing ransom demand, the kidnap was a protest against alleged misuse of Federal Government facilities.

The statement reads in part: “MEND have made accidental contact with the abductors of the sister of Mr Oronto Douglas, Special Advisor to President Goodluck Jonathan on Research and Strategy.”
