Pregnant Student at Christian University Bleeds to Death after Giving Birth All Alone

October 14, 2013

An historically black college student was found dead in her room alone after she gave birth to a 32 week old stillborn.Ayaanah Gibson, 19, a freshman attending Benedict College in South Carolina, gave birth to the stillborn late Saturday and was found early Sunday morning in the dormitory. The South Carolina coroner’s office reported to the state newspaper that Gibson hadn’t sought medical attention during her 30-32 week pregnancy period. She also appeared to be pregnant before she graduated high school in May.Gibson, who was to major in Chemistry, hailed from Sacramento, California and decided to attend the small Christian college in Columbia, South Carolina. On her Facebook page, Gibson expressed homesickness after only being on campus for a few days.“I miss California. South Carolina is something else I tell you”, she stated in a status. The unfortunate event could have been prevented, given that Benedict College offers free access to a health center that provides gynecological care, according to officials from the college.  County Coroner Gary Watts says that it appears that Gibson went into spontaneous labor and had not planned the delivery. The Benedict College family issued a statement to students on campus Friday.“The Benedict College family is deeply saddened this evening about the unexpected loss of one of its students. Please join the Benedict College family in praying for our fallen Tiger and her family,” the campus wrote.
