Breaking News: Russian President And Wife Say Marriage Is Over after 30yrs

June 6, 2013

Reuters reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin and his wife have said their marriage is over:

Vladimir Putin, 60, and Lyudmila Putina, 55, were married in 1983 and have two daughters.
“We practically never see each other,” Mrs. Putin said in an interview with Russia 24. “We have our own lives.”

Previous rumours had swirled around the demise of Russia’s first couple, dating back to 2008 when a report about Putin divorcing Lyudmila to marry a gold medal-winning gymnast led to the publishing newspaper being shut down, according to Fox News. The couple also appeared uncomfortable in a public appearance in 2010, fuelling speculation their marriage had already ended.

Lyudmila also disappeared from the public eye for a number of months into 2012, leading to speculation the couple had divorced.

This time, however, the conjecture became fact. RT reports:

“It was our joint decision, our marriage is over,” President Putin said in the interview to Russia24 state channel.
Asked to confirm if that was a divorce, Ludmila Putina said, “Yes, you can say that, this is civilized divorce.”

“I do not like publicity, and the flights are complicated for me. We love our children, we are proud of them and see each other often,” Lyudmila Putin.

Despite the split, Mrs. Putin said she and the president “will always be friends.”

“I am grateful that he supports me,” she said.

This is a developing story. Check back for more updates.
